Transit Oriented Development: An Introduction

This one day short course provided an introduction to the state of practice in transit oriented development (TOD).

Course Objectives:

  • Describe the trends that support interest in TOD
  • Define TODs using a performance-based framework
  • Identify current barriers to more effective TOD implementation
  • Describe the role of the transit system in creating locational value for TODs
  • Identify three strategic variables that define a transit system’s effectiveness at creating market value
  • Identify each of the primary ‘actors’ involved in producing TODs and describe the interests of each actor
  • Describe the traffic and parking attributes of TODs and strategies for managing these
  • Describe the planning and zoning tools available for facilitating TOD development
  • Identify the ‘ABCs’ of TOD planning
  • Describe the real estate development process and identify four strategies for facilitating this development.

Presenter:

Alan Hoffman,
The Mission Group, San Diego California

Alan Hoffman is the founding principal of The Mission Group, a strategic planning firm specialising in innovation in the areas of transportation and urban development. He has helped formulate long-range transit strategies for San Diego and Riverside Counties as well as for the metro Atlanta region, and is a regular workshop speaker on transit planning and land-use integration for the National Transit Institute. A former professor of Service Management and Market Research at INCAE (the Central American Institute of Business Administration), Alan has served on the research faculty of the Harvard Business School and has consulted to the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, and the U.S. Agency for International Development. Mr. Hoffman graduated cum laude from Cornell University in the social sciences. He also holds a Master's degree from Harvard University in Administration, Planning and Social Policy, and a Master's from MIT in Urban Studies and Planning.
