Integrating the Priorities of a Place, with Those of a Public Transport System – a Brief Case Study
Session 7

Stephen Kerr - Manager Integrated Planning, Parramatta City Council, Sydney Australia

Sydney’s first T-way passes through 35 stations on its 31 km journey from Liverpool to Parramatta. This is the story of one of those stations, and the town centre it now serves, told from the perspective of local government.

The imperative to construct a new piece of public transport infrastructure in a tight timeframe through a place that had been developed with only the expectation of roads to serve its transport needs presented challenges for all those involved. How do you make the most of the opportunities it presents, and how do you manage the potential threats. How do you integrate the priorities of a place, with those of a public transport system? Where do you make compromises? Do you compromise the efficiency of the system, or do you compromise the functioning of the place? And how do you involve the people who live there, or who have already invested in the place, or who intend investing in the place?

The following presentation explores these questions as they presented themselves in the Bonnyrigg Town Centre, a place with its own unique characteristics and needs.
