In recent times, governments and transport
authorities have been putting in place strategies and systems
to enhance and support both national security and traveler safety.
The ITS industry has been asked to deliver solutions that meet
the challenges of ensuring infrastructure survivability and enhancing
disaster response. At the same time, it is recognised that the
technologies often deployed as part of ITS initiatives can play
a role in public safety - especially for users of public transport
facilities.
This paper overviews the ITS technologies
and trends that are playing a part in national security and public
safety efforts. It addresses issues such as the role of ITS systems
in national security, designing systems for survivability, the
role of ITS solutions in disaster response, solutions that assist
in the management of incidents, and the integration of public
safety solutions in public transport control centres.
