Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) provides effective electronic monitoring and management of transport systems from central locations connecting to geometrically dispersed control and display stations. ITS functions offer significant benefits to Bus Operators, the Transport regulator as well as to the travelling public. In this paper we will explore how Intelligent Transport Systems have been provided for the Liverpool to Parramatta (bus) Transitway and how the experiences gained during the planning, installation and early days of passenger use have an impact on the rest of the Transitway Network. The paper reviews the goals of the Transitway program then focuses on strategies to allow smooth interfacing of ITS installation and testing with the complex/disruptive heavy civil work performed by multiple contractors at sites. Techniques to make this happen include partnering with stakeholders and the use of more resilient technologies such as redundant fibre optics rings.
