The Tidal Flow Lane Control System was
developed to deliver the Coronation Drive Bus Lane Project for
the Brisbane City Council. This innovative project provides an
inbound or outbound bus lane by reversing the flow of traffic
in the middle lane. This paper provides some background on the
project and details the control system architecture and components,
including hardware, software and networks.
The control system is built upon the
core requirements of a robust and reliable error detection and
fault handling engine and a safe and efficient transition engine.
The paper covers core operational aspects, from the automated
error detection and transition engine components, to the operator
interface and operator interactions.
The Tidal Flow Lane Control System has
been operational since December 2002, and this paper concludes
with some observations about the interaction between road users,
traffic control centre operators and new ITS-style control systems.
