A Comparison Between Recent Bus Infrastructure Developments and User Needs
Session 4

Graham Currie - Senior Associate, Booz Allen Hamilton, Melbourne Australia

This presentation outlines the range and types of recent developments in bus transit infrastructure and compares this with evidence of what bus users and potential users want from improved services.

Infrastructure initiatives considered include those directly relevant to passenger service and amenity. They include vehicle design developments. Bus system infrastructure developments including stops, interchanges, information systems, bus priority, busways and Bus Rapid Transit initiatives are also considered. These are categorised relative to the types of needs being addressed.

User needs are considered through a summary of a range of research including market research surveys of passenger perceptions. A summary of research evidence where users value aspects of public transport travel such as wait time, travel time, transfers etc as well as infrastructure amenity features are also considered. This results in a summary of what users think are important in design issues including priorities related to each of these.

The paper compares infrastructure development with what research shows are the major user concerns. Strengths and weakness of current approaches are identified. Priorities for future bus transit infrastructure development are suggested.
