Des Dent - Engineering Manager Traffic and Transport, Tyco Safety Products, Sydney Australia

Jack Turner - Manager, Ticketing and Radio, Passenger Transport Board, Adelaide South Australia

Graeme Vellacott - Public Transport Division Department of Infrastructure, Melbourne Victoria

This paper is based on first hand experience in the deployment and operations of “Smart™” systems on buses and signs in Melbourne and Adelaide. Most of the technical issues have already been addressed in previous papers and this paper is a result of a cooperative effort between government and the private sector in implementing SMART transport systems. It also explores the issues facing transport authorities relating to the deployment of these systems. It examines the landscape surrounding real world operational experience and the public acceptance of the introduction of new technology.

It discusses some of the system options available to PT operators and the interfaces necessary with other Traffic and Transport Authorities. The human aspects of driver acceptance of new technology, passenger responses, increases in patronage and the public acceptance of new systems are addressed.

Mention is made of some implementation issues and the methods adopted to resolve problems encountered during commissioning.

Finally, the paper discusses possible future enhancements, the potential for future widespread adoption of these systems and the synergy associated with the integration of other public transport organizations to the SMART systems.
