During 2002 and 2003, Barry Gyte has been undertaking contract
work in Manchester, England, on Quality Bus Corridors (QBCs) with
the Greater Manchester Public Transport Executive (GMPTE).
QBCs are an holistic approach to transport corridors, looking
at the total door to door journey, including quality pedestrian
access, safe road crossings, quality waiting environments, bus
priority (including techniques such as queue relocation and virtual
bus lanes). Cycle priority, provision for parking and loading
and integration with land use is also built into the corridor
assessment, delivering an integrated transport and urban environment
outcome.
The presentation will:
» cover the scope of the QBC programme
» describe some of the innovative techniques
used; and
» discuss the implications for urban areas
in Australia.
