Brisbane's new Bus Priority and Busway Initiatives – Government Agencies in Partnership
Session 2

Ken Deutscher - Manager Transport and Traffic Branch, Brisbane City Council, Brisbane Australia

Jurgen Pasieczny - Queensland Transport, Brisbane Australia

Brisbane and South East Queensland’s current public transport network has been subject to a continuous process of network planning and review, in response to population, travel pattern, and land use changes. The result has been fragmented service delivery and contractual arrangements.

With the development of the Integrated Ticketing Project and "TransLink" entity, historical barriers to service integration are being removed. While the current way the public transport network is planned is changing, significant challenges still exist in coordinating services and funding the required transport improvements.

The Transport Plan for Brisbane identifies the further development of bus priority and busway initiatives as a key component of Brisbane's transport future. Current experience in operating the South East Busway has been very successful.

These initiatives are closely supported by programs such as CNG buses and other transport projects such as new tunnel infrastructure, providing a balanced approach to Brisbane's overall transport strategy.

The “Smart Urban Transport Challenge” includes the development of an overall transport technology strategy which:
» assists customers to move around the City and SEQ region
» assists business effectiveness;
» supports commercial opportunities
» supports Queensland Smart State image
