Heavy investment is being made in busways and transitways throughout Australia, Asia, North America and Europe. Attention has now turned to the operation of this infrastructure to create a true bus-based rapid transit (BRT) which is fully integrated with other modes. Recent advances in the contracting of bus services, vehicle design, clean engine technologies, and intelligent transport systems (ITS) offer great potential to support BRT. Ultimately BRT and mass transit of all types (rail and bus) will be judged on their ability to attract significant patronage - recent experience with new mass transit systems opened in the Asia-Pacific region provides some insight into how they are perceived by potential riders. Following calls for a follow-up to the first Smart Urban Transport Conference held in October 2000, Transport Roundtable Australasia organised this second conference. |
