Australian cities have been enjoying strong
population and economic growth. Our cities are under stress
from the increasing demand for mobility.
Transport and land use plans are being prepared
usually with limited understanding of the property market,
the effect of economic cycles, and the needs of investors.
In South East Queensland, the new Office of Urban Management
is developing the first regional land use and associated infrastructure
plan that will have statutory force. Transport and other infrastructure
planning and delivery processes at regional and local levels
will be impacted.
Mega transport infrastructure projects are being proposed
although our understanding of their role in cities, and how
to maximise potential benefits, is constrained by our lack
of knowledge and inadequate frameworks for assessment. The
relationship between major proposed road and tunnel infrastructure
on accessibility, on associated investment, and proposed land
use change is currently a key topic in Brisbane and Sydney.
