After graduating in Electrical Engineering Des Dent joined Main Roads Queensland where he was instrumental in the installation of the first computer controlled traffic system in Australia. He has 40 years experience in the ITS industry and has specialised in the application of computers to transport engineering.

As Regional and Operations Manager for PPK Consultants for 14 years, he managed large ITS and transport infrastructure projects in Australia and South East Asia for the World Bank, AusAID and the private sector, and for several years in the 80's was Ministerial adviser on transport in the Philippines.

As the Engineering Manager for TransCore Australia, he supervised the design and installation of electronic tolling systems on several motorways in Sydney. and assisted the commissioning of the Transport Management Center in Sydney.

He is currently Manager Traffic and Transport for Tyco Electronics Project Group and is responsible for hardware and software systems. Current projects include Smartbus Melbourne, Adelaide and Auckland ATMS II.
