Creating a Smart Busway - Session 6

Brisbane's new South East Busway is one of the most technologically advanced Bus Rapid Transit systems in the world. Busway infrastructure and operations management is seamlessly integrated at a new Busway Operations Centre. Busway systems include: · Bus tracking, communications, and tactical management · Real-time passenger information signage · Passenger security · Plant (tunnels, lifts) monitoring and incident response The entire system - buses, stations, tunnels, approach roads - is wired for rapid incident detection, confirmation, and response. The Busway is tied into the regional traffic management system, and the system is scalable for planned extensions. The design, procurement, and implementation of the South East Busway ITS has been a complex, ground-breaking task. The strategies used, outcomes, and lessons learned will be of interest to Bus Rapid Transit proponents.
